Experience the thriving wilderness culture in the wilds of Eastern Lapland.
The Savukoski region is a sparsely inhabited wilderness district. About ten times as many reindeer as people traverse the area. Distinctly different seasons, snow and open fires are all part of the cosy life and wilderness culture. The traditions in the region are linked with the hunting culture, log floating and logging culture of the Forest Lapps. Forestry, small-scale agriculture, reindeer husbandry and natural produce still comprise the most significant sources of livelihood in the area. Nature represents a very large part of everyday life, and natural produce is put to good use.
Hunting, fishing, berry and mushroom picking are regular ways of life for most of the locals. The Savukoski region offer Forest Lapp culture at its most genuine.
